Dog Bite

Each year millions of people are bitten by dogs. Some require medical attention. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), dog bites are a national epidemic, proximately 386,000 of those injured required emergency medical treatment and some have died as a result of such attacks.

In California, a dog owner is legally responsible (“liable”) for all injuries and damages caused by his or her dog’s attack. This is true even if it was the first time the dog had ever attacked anyone and had never shown any sign of aggressiveness. A dog owner is responsible for the dog attack even if the attack occurred on the owner’s own property. Anyone who is on the dog owner's property, including a postman or a meter reader from the gas company may look to the dog owner for compensation for their injuries that resulted from the dog attack. Most of the time, the dog owner's Homeowners Insurance Policy will cover the expenses and injuries suffered by the injured party.

Some dog attacks are relatively minor in nature and only require initial emergency treatment while some dog bites are referred to as maulings and require reconstructive surgeries and physiological treatment to deal with the emotional trauma and the fear that resulted from the dog attack.
