SUV Rollovers

suv_accident

About one half of cars sold are SUVs.  Most people buy SUVs because they like the size, or the large space for groceries and other purchases, or the extra seats they sometimes have.  Most people who buy SUVS never take them off road.

However, these vehicles are designed and marketed to also be taken off road, and therefore have important differences from regular passenger cars. For example, they have a higher center of gravity, to provide more ground clearance if they are driving over rough terrain. This is perfectly fine if you are trying to avoid boulders as you drive across a desert landscape.

HOWEVER,  if you are driving on the freeway, and another car cuts you off, the higher center of gravity can make the SUV more prone to rolling over.  Some car manufacturers account for this and make their SUVs in a way that counteracts the possibility of a roll over in certain types of accidents.  But not all of the manufacturers do this, and so if you are injured in a roll over of an SUV, the possibility that the SUV is not properly designed should be explored.
