Nevada County, CA – Fatal head-on collision with a semi on Alta Sierra Drive
NEVADA COUNTY, CA – After a pickup and semi-truck collided on Highway 49 at Alta Sierra Drive Tuesday morning, both northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 49 are open. One person was killed in the crash.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that, at approximately 6:25 a.m., a 48-year-old woman driving a Toyota Tacoma swerved to avoid hitting a deer. In addition to hitting the deer, the 48-year-old then hit Roberto Ordaz-Moralez, who was driving a semi-truck hauling 60,000 pounds of medical supplies in the southbound lane.
The driver of the Toyota Tacoma died after he was ejected from the vehicle. Injuries to the semi-truck driver were minor and he was released at the scene.
The crash ruptured the semi-truck’s fuel tank, spilling approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel into a ditch on the east side of Highway 49. A hazmat crew was called to assist with the gas spill.
CHP says the incident is still under investigation.
