Merced, CA (October 26, 2021) – A man was hit by a vehicle on Sunday evening and seriously injured at approximately 7:00 p.m., at the intersection of R & 18th Streets.

Authorities said a woman driving her car headed north on R Street struck the man while he was crossing the road.

Paramedics transported the victim to an area medical center in critical condition, per initial reports concerning the incident. At this time, he has not been identified to the public.

Traffic was delayed in the area for some time while emergency crews worked at the scene. Drivers commuting in the vicinity of the crash site were asked to find different routes of travel for the time being.

Police in Merced continue to investigate the details of the collision. We hope for the full recovery of the injured pedestrian.

Pedestrian Accidents in California

Over 150,000 victims sustain injuries in traffic collisions throughout the state of California each year. Thousands of these victims who are hurt are not even the occupants of vehicles when their accidents occur. Instead, a number of those who are victimized in California traffic accidents are pedestrians. Due to the year-round warm weather, many people choose to walk or ride bikes in the Golden State. These accidents send tens of thousands of people to area hospitals annually where they must undergo sometimes invasive emergency medical treatment due to their injuries.

Those hurt in pedestrian collisions in Merced and across the state of California are often left with broken bones, brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries, all of which require immediate and expensive medical care. Some must even endure emergency surgeries which can be difficult to recover from. Unfortunately, a number of these instances are car wrecks caused by the negligent actions of motorists.

These accidents may be the result of people choosing to text or talk on the phone while driving, driving while intoxicated, driving at unsafe speeds, and ignoring traffic rules and devices. Pedestrians who sustain serious or life-altering injuries in traffic accidents in California should consider contacting a skilled pedestrian accident attorney in Merced as soon as possible.
