Bakersfield, CA – Drunk Driver Causes Injuries in Hit & Run Crash at Sixth & Kern Aves

Torem & Associates

Bakersfield, CA (December 14, 2021) – A man from Maricopa was arrested after causing an injury accident at an intersection in Bakersfield. The incident happened at about 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 12 near the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Kern Avenue.

Sources say that the man was driving drunk at the time of the wreck and slammed into the driver’s side of a sedan, trapping the victim inside until firefighters were able to extricate him from the vehicle. The suspect was identified as Bernardino Augustin Nava, age 27.

Police stated that the victim was headed east on Kern in a Chevrolet Impala when they stopped at the stop sign before proceeding into the intersection. It was there that they were struck by Nava. The suspect’s vehicle, a Ford Explorer, was headed south on Sixth Avenue and ran the stop sign.

Nava, along with two or three passengers present in his vehicle at the time, fled the scene without rendering aid or waiting for police. The victim, a 17-year-old male, required transportation by helicopter to Kern Medical for the treatment of major injuries.

On top of two felony counts, Nava was also charged with driving without a license, not having proof of insurance, and failure to stop at a stop sign. Authorities in Bakersfield continue to investigate.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim in hopes of a full recovery.

California Injury Accidents

One of the most devastating experiences a person can go through is being injured in a car accident. This is mostly due to the fact that victims are usually left with painful, sometimes life-altering injuries that demand extensive, often expensive medical treatment.

In California, over 150,000 people are injured and require hospitalization annually as a result of injuries sustained in traffic-related incidents. Usually, injured victims are transported from the site of the crash and admitted into hospitals for treatment. Some injuries require emergency surgery and days or even weeks spent in hospitals. This usually means lost wages for most people, which can be extremely stressful. Especially when they are faced with the costs associated with their accident on top of their regular bills. Many people feel scared, confused, and generally unsure of how to move forward after being involved and injured in an accident.

When victims sustain injuries in accidents due to the negligence of other motorists sharing the road, it is crucial that they reach out to a car accident attorney in Bakersfield as soon as they can. Injured accident victims may be entitled to financial compensation that can help alleviate some or all of the financial burdens they may face moving forward. Oftentimes, crash victims are able to recover compensation to cover both economic and non-economic damages, including:

  • Long-term care expenses
  • Medical bills
  • Vehicle repairs/replacement
  • Lost wages
  • Mental turmoil
  • Pain and suffering
  • Punitive damages

In cases where victims lose their lives, surviving relatives may be entitled to compensation for funeral costs, burial fees, loss of consortium, and various other damages.
