Construction May Cause Traffic Headaches for Fresno Busy Street

Torem & Associates

According to ABC30 News, no “through traffic” will be allowed now that the construction on McKinley shifts directions. The workers will now be installing underground water lines from Fresno to Blackstone. Although limited access will be permitted for businesses in the area, commuters will need to take a detour around the construction zone. Motorists will be directed to go north to Clinton Avenue when trying to reach Fresno from Blackstone.

In addition to businesses being hurt by the detour, students and others trying to get to Fresno City College may see a change in traffic conditions. The college is encouraging students to park in a lot located behind Ratcliff Stadium. The school will provide a shuttle for students who park in this lot. Motorists and others must also deal with crews installing water lines Palm between H Street and McKinley, which could add to the traffic congestion in the area.

Traffic Accidents Near Construction Zones

The additional traffic congestion and detours could increase your risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident.  Motorists must be very careful when approaching and driving through construction zones to avoid accidents. Common reasons for construction zone accidents include:

  • Driving in lanes that have been closed
  • Speeding (ignoring posted work zone/construction zone speed limits)
  • Distracted driving (i.e. texting, cell phone use, reading, being distracted by the workers, etc.)
  • Failing to follow posted signs or directions given by workers
  • Improper passing
  • Following too closely (i.e. tailgating)

Traffic accidents near construction zones can result in catastrophic injuries that can change your life forever. Is there anything you can do to avoid these accidents?

Ways to Avoid Construction Zone Accidents

Accidents in construction zones can be avoided if you practice safe driving habits for construction zones:

  • Always slow down and obey the posted speed limit for construction areas
  • Avoid distractions — do not use your cell phone and keep your eyes and mind focused on what is ahead
  • Never tailgate — leave extra room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you to avoid a rear-end collision in stop-and-go construction traffic
  • Pay attention to the warnings signs for upcoming zones
  • Be ready for the unexpected — a car swerving into your lane, road debris, moving construction equipment, etc.
  • Stay as far away from construction workers and equipment as safely possible

Slowing down and paying attention are two of the best ways to avoid a construction zone accident.  It is not just your life you are protecting — you are protecting the lives of the men and women who are simply trying to finish their jobs and go home to their families.
