Mendocino, CA – Big-Rig crash kills woman and dog
MENDOCINO, CA – The California Highway Patrol released new details this morning about a head-on collision that killed a woman and her dog on Highway 101 near Spyrock Road on Monday afternoon. According to the CHP, the decedent was driving north when her brown Nissan Titan crossed over the double yellow line and struck a semi-truck hauling soil around 2:35 p.m. After the collision, the vehicle caught fire, and the decedent died as a result.
In the crash, the big-rig driver, 35, from Willits, suffered major injuries and was transported to Adventist Health Howard Memorial hospital. A name has been withheld from this article to protect the victim’s privacy; and an update on his condition was not immediately available. The crash blocked the highway for about six hours while emergency personnel cleared soil and vehicles from the road.
The pickup was carrying two dogs at the time of the crash. The animal survived and was taken to the Mendocino County Animal Shelter.
It was cold and cloudy when the crash occurred, but rain and hail had been moving through the area all day. The weather may have been a factor, but it is not considered the cause. According to Officer Clevenger, who wrote the press release below, the pickup driver crossed into opposing traffic.
